Article Overview
Google announced a huge new update known as MUVERA – a weird name, but the implications for the SEO landscape are massive.
And for backlinking, it’s as we always say with these Google updates – a massive game changer, it’s huge! Read this and make sure you fully understand the implications, as your SEO agency needs to be well on top of Muvera.
What is Muvera?
Muvera essentially defines how user search queries will relate to content online. I want to make this as easy to understand as possible and avoid overwhelming you with too much technical jargon. So let me break it down and explain what it means for page content and link building.
- Google can now display content that matches the user’s search intent, even if the phrasing doesn’t include exact keywords. So if I’m searching for ‘red tennis shoes’, you might get results with the page intent of ‘sports shoes’.
- Pages with well-written copy that remain on topic and are well-structured will rank higher in search engine results. Content has always been a favourite of Google, but now it matters even more with the emergence of AI Overviews.
- Search results are becoming more closely aligned with how humans understand and interpret information.
How Muvera Affects Link Building
Muvera doesn’t kill link building; it just raises the bar. As an SEO Expert, I’ve always said that it’s all about the quality of links, not the quantity, but the Muvera update drives this home. The cornerstone of any SEO campaign moving forward in 2025 and beyond has these pillars: E-E-A-T content compatibility, relevance of link placement on the page, and content freshness will play a massive role in determining your online visibility.
In the pre-Muvera SEO, generic link building often relied on the usual SEO tactics:
- Find a blog or web page with a decent domain authority.
- Write about a 1000-word article and insert an exact match anchor. For example, if I wanted to rank for ‘SEO agency Sydney’, I would insert these exact three words into the blog and hyperlink them to our homepage. SEO agencies can produce numerous articles using platforms like ChatGPT, making the process even quicker.
- Get the page indexed with Google Search Console.
- Cross your fingers and hope for the best.
However, to be honest, this type of SEO link building hasn’t been effective for ages. In fact, it’s had the opposite effect. Dodgy link-building practices, the usual fare of many SEO companies, have harmed the rankings of many Sydney businesses. And now it’s gonna be a lot more painful for those agencies that cannot comply.
So what exactly changes with the Muvera update?
Google now analyses the surrounding content around the anchor text link. Pre Muvera link-building strategies were basic. You could drop some keywords in a random blog and link it to your site, and it would work. You could buy these cheap links online, and they’d be inserted into any post, and you would hope that it would boost those keywords on Google Muvera’s so smart that it looks at:
- the domain the link is on and how relevant it is to your website
- the topic of the page and if it bears any relationship to the keywords
- all the content surrounding the link
This link must be completely relevant to the page, the website, and the content.
So what does this mean for your link-building campaign?
- Links placed in low-context, off-topic content that have no relevance to your website will have zero impact on your SEO.
- Contextually embedded links in thematically relevant, deeply structured content will carry greater semantic weight and will help with your rankings and online visibility.
Google is increasingly able to detect whether an anchor is synthetic, spammy, or overly optimised, even if it is implemented correctly and doesn’t violate any of Google’s guidelines.
Muvera Examples
Before Muvera
A surfboard company wants to rank for “surfboards for beginners”. They place a link with exact-match anchor text in a generic blog post titled “Top 10 Surfboards to Take on Holiday in 2025” on a general surf travel blog. The paragraph barely mentions beginners or what beginner surfboards must have.
Result: The link is indexed, but carries limited SEO value. Google may detect it as spammy and discount its value. Do this too often and you might end up with a penalty.
After Muvera
The same surf company sponsors a mini-series of guest posts on a surfer’s travel blog for beginners. One post, titled “Best Types of Surfboards for Beginners to Rip,” includes a link with anchor text “these boards are the best for beginners” embedded in a paragraph explaining waves to choose.
Result: The link sits within rich, semantically relevant content on a highly aligned domain. It signals authority, trust, and relevance, and performs better in search results.
How to Build Links in a Muvera-Compliant Way: Practical Tips
Here’s a checklist of best practices to apply when you work on your backlink profile with Muvera changes in mind:
Filter referring domains by semantic relevance, and don’t just go with the old-fashioned way of thinking that it has a high domain authority, so it’s OK to publish a blog. People often ask me if I’ll include links in relevant posts, and over the last few years, I have had to adjust our SEO link building strategy to ensure that they are relevant to your business.
.Ensure the link is embedded in relevant content.
Two to four surrounding paragraphs should logically lead into or support the link. You can’t simply insert a link into a post and expect it to be effective. A good piece of advice is to think of the link as a conclusion, reference, or next step within the flow of the content.
Use natural mentions, not just keyword anchors.
Branded mentions (like the actual name of the business and not the core keywords), URLs, or CTA-style phrases like “source”, “research shows”, or “read more about the business” are now more effective than over-optimised anchors in random blogs.
Build topic clusters on the sites of your referring domains.
Instead of publishing a one-off, random guest post, place a series of interlinked articles on the same site (if allowed) covering different aspects of your niche, which creates a “on-topic footprint” that strengthens context and trust, as long as this site is somewhat relevant to your site.
Refresh older web content with updated data.
Sometimes, your old blogs may contain data dating back to 2015, which is highly outdated and unlikely to be helpful to anyone. Old, outdated content will never rank as it’s so unhelpful. For example, blogs with titles like “Beginner’s Guide to the Best Surf Spots in 2015” are outdated, as it’s been over 10 years since then. Relevant back then, but it will turn users off today. Audit all your web content and revise the copy with updated, relevant information to ensure accuracy and relevance. And, look at all your links within the blogs and ensure they don’t link to dead, outdated or irrelevant articles. Refreshing outbound and internal links is also a great idea.
Enrich the surrounding anchor text content with LSI phrases.
Muvera interprets meaning not only from the anchor text but also from the entire blog environment surrounding the link. Use Latent Semantic Indexing phrases. This may sound complicated, but it’s actually straightforward.
Example: If your target page is about “surfboards,” your referring content within the page you are linking to should also include terms like “surfboard wax,” “surfwear,” and “surfboard bags.” All you have to do is make the page as informative and surfboard-centric as possible.
How to Structure Your Anchor List Post-Muvera
Never ever over-optimise keywords! This is SEO 101 and has been part of our SEO strategy for eons. Repetitive keyword stuffing and links are old school and have no impact on your rankings.
Anchor text optimisation has always been about a balanced approach. However, Muvera’s focus on semantic understanding, organic and natural variation and contextual sense makes balanced anchor distribution a critical factor in the Muvera environment. Below is how you should balance your anchor text:
Branded / URL > 30–40% = brandname.com.au
CTA-style / Generic Anchors > 20–30% = Learn more, Read full guide, See research or Author
Exact-Match Keywords = ≤15% buy surfboards online, best SEO tools — with exact match domains, please use this sparingly. I know the temptation is to use these words; the best approach is quality over quantity.
Long-Tail Keywords > 15–20% = How to choose a plumber in Bondi, Best family lawyers in Parramatta.
Mentions Without Anchors > 10–15% = Footnotes, captions, citations where the brand or web page is referenced but not linked via text. Yes, it does exist where you do not want a backlink to your site. And, you might want to include a ‘nofollow’ link to make your profile look more natural.
SEO Sydney Experts Tip: Use these percentages as your go-to reference points. But the key and super important tip here is not to over-optimise your main core keywords.
