5 Myths about Search Engine Optimisation you MUST not believe

I hope you enjoy reading this blog post.

Search Engine Optimisation or commonly referred to as (SEO) is the technique of improving a website’s position on Google in order to drive more traffic through to that website.

Essentially, the higher you are on Google the more clicks you are going to get on your website and this, in turn, will lead to more sales or inquiries.

It is that simple; improve one organic position on Google through white-hat link building SEO practices and you will profit. It’s clear cut.

Untruth #1 Adwords or (PPC) will help improve your organic, natural ranking

If only this were true, then everyone would be scrambling to pay more for their Adwords. I still can’t believe how many people still believe this insane myth. Adwords or PPC is totally different from SEO. Adwords, as we all know, are the paid ads on the right-hand side of the Google page as well as the top 3 ads – everything else is SEO related and this is where you want your website to be located. The huge difference between PPC and SEO is that you have to pay for PPC and SEO is free.

If spending more money on Adwords would help your SEO then the whole fabric of Google would break down. Why? Cause anyone can pay to be up on page 1 through an Adwords campaign BUT only 10 websites can be on page 1 at any point in time. This myth is perpetuated by Adword companies that try to fool you into believing that the more you spend with them on a PPC campaign, the more your website will get clicked on and the more popular your site will become. The crux of the myth is that popular sites that are clicked on via AdWords will improve rankings cause Google MUST love popular sites – what a load of rubbish and what a bunch of baloney – Get this idea out of your mind, cause the only way a website will rank in the search results is through SEO. Simple as that – so let’s kill off this untruth.

Untruth #2 The larger the website, with more pages, the better.

You might think that the more pages you have on your website the better it will do when it comes to rankings. Overall, this is not a bad strategy but you have to ask yourself what type of content am I publishing on my website. Is it dribble or is it worth reading then sharing online with other people who may also like what you have to say?

It’s all about content marketing and Google will reward your website if you are blogging and publishing pages that are deemed to be useful and worthwhile. Putting pages live just for the sake of it and beefing your site up to try and manipulate SEO is a myth and one that needs to be sorted out ASAP. Google has released algorithms that can detect poorly worded content and this is going to hamper any chance you may have of ranking. Not only does it annoy your reader but it will kill your SEO – the golden rule is to publish content that you are proud of. Anything else simply delete.

Untruth #3 Let’s get as many links as we can

This is without doubt the worst myth and the most common one. People are still under the impression that the more inbound links you have the better off you will be. Perhaps 5 years ago this was the case, but just try to get away with it now and see what happens – a MASSIVE Google penalty. That’s all you will get. Links are now considered voodoo unless they are from credible worthwhile sources that are actually relevant to your website.

So many and I mean there are hundreds of really bad SEO agencies throughout Australia that still practice this type of SEO and I really feel sorry for those people that believe the lies they are spun, just to get your business. It’s a scam and a fraud and if you are a believer of link building schemes then you better stop it right there.

In some cases, when SEO is handled by a proper SEO agency like us here at SEO SYDNEY EXPERTS, link building is OK – all that needs to happen is that it is implemented in a controlled and strategic manner. This is the cornerstone and foundation of proper SEO and is what we live by.

There are so many types of link building styles that this MUST be managed in a controlled manner- ideally, you need high-quality links – this is an extremely important myth so if you are still unclear about this I really recommend that you give me a call on 02 9360 8514.

Untruth #4 Keyword stuffing will work

The theory here kind of makes sense. It goes something like this. If I use the same keyword for my business in the page title and throughout the content of the page then in theory it should rank better than the next person. Well, WRONG! I see sites that have tried this and the only outcome is that it looks absolutely abysmal.

Known as keyword spamming, this was once a favourite of many people who thought they could push their page up the rankings by writing really bad copy and repeat the process. Again, like monotonous web content, this is just as ridiculous and Google has simply put an end to this. If your website sounds even remotely spammy it’s just not going to rank.

WHY?

Because Google wants to display search results to the users that are credible. Google would lose customers and online users if it ranked substandard websites. Hence if you want to rise above the masses and have a website that sits right up there on page 1 of Google make sure you spend the appropriate amount of time, energy and brain energy that makes compelling reading. Anything other than the best will not survive Google’s stringent algorithmic filters.

Untruth #5 Any old SEO company will do

Wow, if only this were the case. Most people have been through their second or even third SEO agency and they still can’t get it right. Why? Cause they tend to choose the company that is going to give them the best price and offer ridiculous ranking guarantees. In short, any SEO SIMPLY WILL NOT do. Making poor choices based on uneducated decisions is the road to online failure and this road is absolutely jammed clogged with the tortured remains of businesses that refused to listen.

I don’t want to harp on this subject too much as I could spend days lecturing you about the pitfalls of using a dodgy SEO company. Suffice to say, go with a company that can actually rank their own website on Google and go with an SEO supplier that’s not trying to ram a 12-month contract down your throat. Don’t believe all the crap they spin you over the phone – go in and actually sit down with them and see if they are all they are cracked up to be.

So there you have it. 5 myths and untruths regarding SEO that should help you on the path of discovering the real realities of SEO – again if you still need a helping hand why not drop me a line.
